Diseases that are transmitted by arthropods cause severe morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Vector diagnostics include assays which detect disease-causing agents and pathogens directly in the vectoring arthropods such as mosquitoes, sand flies, ticks and other biting insects.
Application of vector tests is important:
- to monitor the spread of disease
- to identify areas where there is risk to humans and other domestic animals of contracting disease,
- to more efficiently target arthropod control measures
- and reduce the impact of disease on ongoing operations, health systems and economies.
In addition, diagnositc tests that detect the presence of disease in humans and animals such as ruminants provide further disease therapy solutions for the sick and affected and point to efforts needed to control and manage the arthropod-borne disease. |
